One of the most powerful
elements of PRINCE2™, I believe, is the control aspects
around the planning, defining and controlling the delivery of the right products.
There are a number of project planning or scheduling tools out there that can 'help'.
However, until now there has been nothing that 'supports' the Product Based Planning technique
within PRINCE2™ and by that I mean a tool that helps you compose the Product Breakdown Structure,
organises and manages Product Descriptions, structures the Product Flow Diagram and exports all
of this to a useful management document of your choice.
I have to say that not only I am genuinely very impressed with P2WORLD Planning,
but I am using it on a live project - the police NMIS, National Management Information System*.
It works, and it adds immediate value. Gone are the days of jumping from MS Word to MS Project
and back again.
* NMIS is the development and implementation of a
corporate data warehouse consolidating all of our crime, HR and command and control systems into one data
warehouse which enable all forces to report the same information back to the Home Office.

Product-based planning is a very powerful technique in PRINCE2™, but has been badly
served in the past by software tools. They were either cumbersome or expensive - usually
both. I have recently been testing a software package called P2WORLD Planning that really
works - and more! I have tried it on Project Plans, broken these down into Stage Plans, modified
them, written Product Descriptions, thrown the PFD into MS Project, all without any problems. It
really is a joy after years of struggling to find such a help.
